Podington Motte

Podington Motte castle, looking towards the motte

Podington Motte is a medieval castle in the village of Podington, Bedfordshire, probably dating from the 11th century.

The castle was probably constructed by Hugh the Fleming after the Norman Conquest of 1066. The castle was a motte and bailey design, with a low motte on the western side, surrounded by an inner bailey, and two outer baileys to the south and east. A low bank and ditch protected the site, which was around 280 m by 120 m across.

It is uncertain when the castle fell out of use. The old Podington Manor house was constructed on the south side of the castle site, and became a farm house in 1694 when the local Orlebar family who owned the manor moved to Hinwick Hall.
