Risinghoe Castle

Looking up at the motte of Risinghoe Castle

Risinghoe Castle was a medieval fortification in the village of Goldington, Bedfordshire, probably dating from the mid-12th century.

The castle was originally a motte and bailey design, although only the motte survives today, approximately 30 m in diameter and 6 m high. It was probably constructed during the civil war known as “the Anarchy”, probably by King Stephen when he besieged Bedford in 1138, and was a temporary structure with timber defences. By the end of the century, it was described in local records as an “old castle” and presumably had been abandoned for some years.

The bailey seems to have survived until the 19th century but was then destroyed as the area was excavated for clay brick-earth. An archaeological excavation of the motte was conducted in 1943.
