Spalding Castle

After the Norman invasion of England in 1066, a small castle was probably built in the manor of Spalding in Cambridgeshire by Ivo Tailbois, the nephew of William the Conqueror. Ivo held various manors across the region, and Spalding probably formed a caput managing his feudal holdings across south Lincolnshire and north Norfolk. Spalding lay near the mouth of the Wash, around 15 km (9 miles) from the sea, acting as a small inland port. The site may have been redeveloped later in the medieval period, with a square moat being constructed around a fortified manor. No traces now survive.
